INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET (3 units) CAOT 97 Advisory: Knowledge of Windows and word processing is required. Students who enroll in the course must attend 3 lab hours per week. The course provides hand-on access to Internet, the worldwide Computer Network. The course emphasizes electronic mail, file transfer protocol, newsgroups, web page design and other services and utilities.

If you think you will need extra time for the final I will come at the regular class time (1:45) and if the room is open you should be able to start at that time, which will get you and extra 45 minutes.

Week 1: Welcome to the Internet

What is the Internet?
A little bit of the history of the worldwide network. What it is an how it works.

IP addresses, domain names, and web addresses
You will be expected to be able to identify each and will be tested on your ability to recognize properly formatted addresses of each type.

What is a Server?
Any computer you can talk to on the internet is a server. Even your own home computer can be a server, if you install the right software.

Web Browsers
How to use a web browser.

Popular Websites
These are some websites that you can look at and should be familiar with, including Google, Yahoo, and Facebook.

Week 2:

Using Gmail
Gmail is Google's free email service. Everyone is *required* to sign up for a Google account. You don't have to use their email, but you will need access to Google for some of our class projects.

Assignment: everyone has to send me an email, to show that they know how to work email.

Facebook
Be sure to set up a Facebook account. We will take pictures of everyone in the class and upload them to facebook.

Assignment: Everyone has to create a facebok account, and "friend" everyone in the class.

Doing Searches
There will be a quiz. You will be expected to clearly understand search terms, and how to choose good search terms to get the results you want.

Week 3:

Google Maps
We will use Google to find information, addresses, directions, alternate routes, and street level images. Other popular map sites include Mapquest and Bing (Microsoft)

Assignment: find the route from LACC to Graceland, by car via chicago, by car via New Orleans, and via bus.

Week 4

Google Docs
Google Docs is very similar to Microsoft Office. We will create spreadsheet and word processng documents and save them on the Google network.

Assignment: Create a budget for a dinner party as a spreadsheet. Share this document to me.

Mafia Wars
This popular game is a time waster, but fun. It is an example of "Viral Marketing". The game encourages you to sign up all your friends. The more friends you sign up, the more you win. That's how the program spreads.

Assignment: complete at least one "level" of Mafia wars, then do a screen capture for proof, put it in a Google Word Processing Document, and share it to me.

Week 4

Create a Quiz
Everybody loves quizzes. Check Buzzfeed, Playbuzz and Tryinteract.

Assignment: take two quizzes on Buzzfeed, then create a quiz on each of the other sites.

Tripadvisor
Tripadvisor compiles user written reviews of hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. Many books and magazines that review travel are biased because of sponsoships and advertising. Tripadvisor solves this by letting travelers write their own reviews.

Assignment: sign up for Tripadvisor and write a review. Email me a link to your review.

Kayak
Kayak offers listings of airline tickets, by compiling results of searches from several other sites, such as Tavelocity and American Airlines.

Hotwire and Priceline
These sites offer you a discount if you can guess the right price or if you are willing to buy a mystery ticket.

Assignment: Plan a short trip to somewhere via airplane, including hotel. Need specific dates and prices. Create a Google Doc with this information and share it to me.

Week 5

Building a portfolio using the New York Times

Assignment: Sign up for the New York Times, and create a stock portfolio you can track. We may replace this with BING.

Researching Stocks
How to find out which stocks are good investments, and how to read the stock reports.

Elections and gambling
Sites that allow us to see the odds on upcoming events.

Wix: build a simple web page
This site will let you build a simple web page from a template, for free.

Email Security and Viruses
How to prevent your computer from being infected.

Spam and Nigerian Scams
How to identify scams, and what to do about it.

An interesting site about fighting spam.

Using Amazon

How to find books, how to buy and sell them. How to get a good price.

We will discuss Amazon and how they do marketing and customer profiling.

We will sell a few books in class. If you have something you'd like to sell, bring it in and we will sell it for you.

How to ship a book you have sold on Amazon
Amazon has automatic forms you can print and put in your package, plus printable postage. It's really easy.

Week 9: Craigs List

Using Craigs List

How to find things on Craigs List, how to put things up for sale on Craigs List, and how to avoid scams.

We will discuss how to write effective ads.

We will try to find a few things to sell on Craigs List.

Week 9: Photography

Digital Photography
Using a digital camera. How to take nice pictures. It's all about good light.

Picture Galleries
How to post your images online, on Facebook and on other gallery sites.

Week 10: Google Docs

Spam Quiz
Also a review of Google Docs, because that's how you will submit the quiz.

Week 11: Elements of Web design

How to use Notepad to type up a web page
Notepad is a windows text editor. You can type up a page, upload it to the server, and you have a web page.

HTML Intro
HTML is the language used to layout web pages.

Assignment: Create a one page website about an animal or cartoon character. Include a picture, some text, and at least one hyperlink. Copy and paste the page into gmail and send it to me at jim.pickrell@gmail.com

How to sell on Ebay
Finding item prices/value, and how to post your listing.

Creating a good Ebay Listing
Stick to the facts. Make sure you have good pictures. Be honest.

How to use esnipe to place last minute bids on items.

If you have something you'd like to sell, bring it in! In past quarters we have sold books, cameras, telephones, purses, and many other items.

You will want to do this so you can upload your site to the server.

Final Project Assignment -
The assignment is to create a website about a travel destination.

Step 1: Getting started on your project
Create a folder and some web pages for our new site using Notepad.

Step 2: Uploading your project to the server
We have created pages on your computer.. Move them to the server.
You should read the instructions on using FTP.

Step 4: View our pages on the server
This part is easy. Look in this location: http://www.brandx.net/lacc/caot97/students.
You will need to add the name of your folder to see your files.

Step 5: Edit our files on the server with the program "Joe".
We will connect using "Putty" and then edit using "Joe". There are separate instructions
for both of these programs if you don't know how to use them.

Step 6: Make some change Using HTML commands
Link the pages together and add the contents as described in the assignment.
We have some notes on Unix, Joe and HTML that will be helpful.

Step 7: Save the files and reload to see our changes.

Step 8: Make sure you include everything that is required in your web page!

Week 12: Topics that will help with your final project

Edit web pages on the server
A short tutorial on PUTTY and JOE. How to connect to the server and edit files in place.

FTP instructions
FTP is the program to upload/download files to/from the server.

Joe Instructions
Joe is a text editor on the Unix server. Use it to edit your html files.

Unix instructions
How to move around on the server, and how to rename, move or delete files.

Html Intro
Html commands allow us to format our web pages.

W3schools HTML Tutorial
This is where to get information on HTML.

Using Zip Archives
How to compress and uncompress files.

Dreamweaver
Introduction to this program for web page editing

Folders and Directories
How files are organized on the hard disk, and how to navigate using text commands.

Copy and Paste
How to copy things from one program to another, and from Windows to Unix. How to copy pictures.

Practice Final Exam for Fall 2014

Week 16: Finals Week

Final Project: Please follow directions carefully. This will be collected at the time of the Final.

The Final Exam will be done in class at the time scheduled according to the LACC finals schedule.

The Practice Final will give you a very good idea of what will be on the final exam.

Grading Final Project this may be slightly revised the day of the final but this will give you and idea what we are looking for.
